Driving around Europe either in your motor home or towing your caravan is an extremely affordable way of seeing the world. However, one of the drawbacks of travelling on foreign soil is that overseas they drive on the other side of the road to us Brits.
One national newspaper has warned that if you are planning on driving in Europe this summer you should swot up before your holiday on the rules of the road in the countries that you are planning on visiting.
This is in addition to running through some basic vehicle maintenance checks such as testing your caravan battery, especially if your cheap caravan batteries have not been replaced for some time. You can buy an affordable replacement sealed leisure battery, as well as motorhome batteries at Advanced Battery Supplies.
The paper highlighted that the Highway Code in France and Austria is very strict; and motorists should always wear a fluorescent jacket if you break down. In Belgium, you must always carry a fire extinguisher on board your caravan, and in Germany you will need to have a warning triangle and a first aid kit too.

Speed limits are also different across the various European countries- however a good rule of thumb is never to go faster than 74 miles per hour if you want to stay on the right side of the law in that country.
It’s also extremely important to carry the right documents such as both parts of your driving license, your vehicles registration, and all of your insurance papers too. Before setting off you should always inform your insurer that you will be driving your vehicle in other countries; while some insurance policies offer a short period of cover overseas, some don’t so it’s important that you check before setting off. If you find that your existing insurance policy does not cover you while you are away you may need to take out another policy, along with break down cover for your holiday.
A lot of Europeans get around using mopeds, and weave in and out of traffic putting themselves and fellow motorists in danger. It’s important to stay focused and use your mirrors to check what is behind you and coming up the side of your vehicle at all times. This can help to reduce your chances of being involves in a collision or accident.

Also, while petrol stations in the UK are open until ten or eleven o’clock at night on the continent petrol stations often shut much earlier- at around seven pm. They are also usually shut on Sundays too.
